National Place in 2024 HALS Challenge!

Laura Knott

Results of the 15th annual HALS Challenge were announced at the annual ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Laura Knott placed in the top three for her submission on the Freedom Riders National Monument. This national park interprets the story of a small interracial band of “Freedom Riders” who challenged discriminatory laws requiring separation of the races in interstate travel. On May 14, 1961, in Anniston, Alabama, they were attacked by white segregationists, who firebombed the Greyhound bus they were riding on the way to New Orleans. Images of the attack appeared in hundreds of newspapers, shocking the American public and spurring the Federal Government to issue regulations banning segregation in interstate travel.
