Park Road 4 CLR Featured at Cultural Landscape Symposium

Entrance portal at east end of Park Road 4. L. Knott

This past February, Texas held its first cultural landscape symposium, sponsored by Preservation Texas in partnership with the National Center on Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) and the National Parks Conservation Association. The symposium addressed the vast expanse of cultural landscapes from the smallest rural settlements to the densest urban environments.

Dr. Michael Strutt, Director of Cultural Resources for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, discussed how the CLR and National Register nomination for Park Road 4, completed by my team at John Milner Associates in collaboration with Preservation Central, gave his department the tools to preserve the road's character-defining features. These included its horizontal and vertical alignment, historic trees, views into the surrounding Hill Country landscape, and its many bridges and culverts hand-built by the CCC and Texas Highway Administration in the 1930s and 1940s. Here is a link to his talk (fast forward to 5:35): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWSaBwVMRmw&list=PL2m2mHd_iGy0HN7xnUW5TzvXrcSIFCOy5&index=17&t=574s
