Created to guide long-term maintenance of National Park Service parkways, "Planting, Land Use, and Maintenance Plans," or "PLUMs" provided guidance for parkway plantings, mowing, and vista clearances. To accomplish this, the 135+ sheets comprising the set of plans for the Blue Ridge Parkway defined mowing boundaries for turf areas and boundaries of vista clearance in some detail. Areas for infill and screen plantings along the entire length of the parkway were also delineated on the plans. Interestingly, relatively small numbers of plants are shown on each sheet, with the proposed plantings generally matching existing plantings in species composition. Some of these plans also showed locations for directional, regulatory and interpretive signs. National Park Service staff is undergoing a massive project of scanning all of these plans to be made available for the public to view.
PLUMs? Yes, Please.
